IDE vs Text Editor 🔎

Whether you're taking a Programming class or watching Tutorials, when you Setup to write Code you've probably seen or heard of things like Code Editors and IDEs. What are they used for? Writing and Editing Code. Some people write with a Code Editor. Some write with an IDE. Are they only for writing Code? Can I just use whichever one I like? Let's find the answers to those questions today

Code Editor

Let's start with Code Editors first. Editing means things like Cut, Copy , Paste , Delete, and a Code Editor works on the same idea. You look at the Code. You fix whatever needs fixing. You add whatever needs adding. You delete whatever should go. Since it's a Code Editor, all it does is edit Code — things like Compiling and Debugging have to be done separately. With some Code Editors, though, you can add Plugins for Compiling Processes and Software Testing. For example, popular Tools like Sublime Text , Visual Studio Code , Atom are Code Editors that are a little different from the rest. By Nature they're Code Editors, but once you add Plugins they can give you a full Development Environment. Other commonly used Code Editors include ones like Vim that the real veterans use, lightweight ones like Komodo Edit, Brackets , and the legendary star of Computer Universities, Notepad ++ .

IDE (Integrated Development Environment)

After the Code Editor comes the IDE. One thing that sets an IDE apart from a Code Editor is that IDEs are really heavy to use. There's a good reason they're heavy, though. It's because they come with a complete set of Compilers and Tools you can use at the Development Level, all built in. There'll be the version Control Systems Developers need. There'll be Code Completion to save time. They'll Check for Errors and raise your Code Quality. You can do Refactoring and Renaming quickly. They aim to give you full Efficiency in a short amount of time, and so on. There are all kinds of IDEs depending on the field you're working in. Some, like Eclipse , NetBeans, Visual Studio , offer Multi-Language Support. For Mobile App Development there are ones like Android Studio and XCode, and so on.

Here I'll briefly go over the differences between the two.

(1) Program Nature

An IDE includes the Software Building And Testing Tools that Developers need. A Text Editor is purely for Editing.

(2) Price

Even a cheap IDE costs around $60 or $70 to buy, and a really good one can run into the hundreds. Code Editors, on the other hand — some are free. Some cost around $20. At most you'll pay about $100.

(3) Requirements

To Run an IDE you need plenty of Disk Space, plenty of Memory, and a good CPU. The higher the Specs, the better. You've probably seen Computers grind to a crawl when opening Android Studio or Visual Studio. Text Editors don't need Requirements as high as an IDE. A little Disk Space and a little Memory will do. They're on the Lightweight side.

(4) Features

Text Editors are easier to use than IDEs. They Support more than one Language. Some Text Editors are good enough to even come with Syntax Highlighting , Version Control and Debugging. But Overall, they still can't match an IDE, which has a full set of Features for Code Intelligence , Project Management.

So now I think you can figure out, depending on your field, whether a Code Editor is enough or whether an IDE is better. You can also decide based on what your machine can handle.

For Android, in my Personal opinion, only an IDE can give you a really good Environment. For the rest, you can choose based on your own Duality Basics. Once you become a Developer, you'll need a good Environment for writing Code and you'll need to be Efficient with little Effort, so you need to know how to choose well and also how to make good use of these tools. So by now you should know what the differences between an IDE and a Code Editor are. One more piece of advice: if you want to install these IDEs and Code Editors yourself, I'd suggest searching YouTube for Tutorials with keywords like "How to install" "How to set up" and installing them yourself

Later on I'll also cover the popular Plugins and Extensions for Code Editors in each field, so Stay Tuned 🙋‍♂️

Code Editor

IDE (Integrated Development Environment)

(1) Program Nature

(3) Requirements

(4) Features
