Self-learning Steps 🧐

This time, whether you're getting ready to become a Developer or you've only just heard about this world, I want to share some Self-learning Steps so you can make a good start and finish strong while there's still time. One thing to note: these points come from my own experience, so they may or may not match what others say. Alright, let's start the Journey.

Build an Environment

Before anything else, the most important thing is to build your Environment. I've noticed a lot of Roadmaps don't mention this. There are 2 kinds here: a Physical Environment and a Logical Environment.

Physical Environment is about things like: do you have the Computer Set Up you need to write Code and study? Even if you don't have a great Desk Set Up, do you have a Study Space? Even what you keep around you to stay clear-headed while you Study matters. When it comes to a Computer Set Up, depending on which Language you're going to learn, you'll need a certain Processor and a certain amount of RAM to work comfortably. And if your Budget allows, things like a Monitor and an External Keyboard are nice to have for a better Coding Experience and more productive work. For forgetful folks like me, Note Taking matters too, so keeping a Note Book or a File where you can review your notes anytime also helps you build a good Physical Environment.

Logical Environment is about, say, if you're going into Front-end, which Software Tools you'll use on your Computer, and looking up Websites and Tutorials you can learn from. One thing I want to stress here: as soon as you start learning, learn the Front-end Keywords first. The terminology, I mean. Also, to have people to turn to with your questions and things you want to know, you need to make good use of Social Media to grow your Community. On Facebook, that means joining the relevant Groups and following people with solid experience for other Programming Knowledge. One more thing: I don't know about others, but I'm sure Music has its own little corner in every Programmer's life. Nothing feels as complete as Coding alone with a song playing and your own thoughts. So your Music Set Up also helps your Logical Environment.

Know Your Own Level

You could call this one of the 3 Ms. The 3 Ms are Measurement, Method and Mindset, the 3 things that matter when you Self Study. Of these, knowing your own Level is Measurement. You need to figure out whether you're a Beginner or at Junior Level, and then focus only on what you need to learn for your Level. A Beginner can't skip HTML and CSS and jump straight into Frameworks, for example. Is learning everything bad? Of course not. It's just that you're more likely to burn through your time, get lost, and end up left behind.

Set Up Time Management

One thing I want to point out here: everyone's best hours for focus are different. Some people are strongest at night, while others find their brain is more Productive in the morning. Pick the time when you're at your strongest and set a Time Set. Decide how much Study Time and how much Practice Time you'll give each day. Clearly decide how many hours you'll spend Learning, how many on reading Documentation, and how many on Self Projects, then work well within that Time Frame. Whatever time works for you is fine, but I do want to remind you to get enough sleep.

Set a Goal

A Journey without a Goal is like your life after 'she' is gone. It's empty of excitement and joy, and there's no meaning in moving forward. So set a Goal: what kind of Developer do you want to become, and how far do you want to go? Only then will you find the Motivation to reach that Goal, and you'll put your heart into everything you do and learn. The other thing, as I always say, is to have Passion. Once you have Passion, I promise living and learning in this world will become fun, and you'll be learning new things every day.

Practice Daily (Passive Learning)

Once you're enjoying it, start the habit of Daily Practice. You can't stop at just studying and learning, which is Active Learning. To make good use of every Input that comes in and turn it into Output, you have to keep Practicing, which is Passive Learning. My advice here is to get at least one Mini Project done each day. Also, once you've learned something, make Flashcards and review them over and over. I get fuzzy myself after learning something, so you can Create Flashcards and use them to Recall. One more thing I want to urge: read a lot. People like us can only handle real Logical Thinking well when we read a lot. Here's what I Recommend -

Find a Mentor

Once your learning is going smoothly on its own, find a Mentor. It could be one of your Seniors or a teacher. The main reason I'm telling you to find one is that no matter how good you get at writing Code, real Real World Experience can only be learned through Seniors. Also, if you only write on your own, you'll only ever have your own point of view. Seniors are more likely to know how a Code Structure could be laid out better. It also cuts down that stubborn 'only my way is right' attitude. If you can, it's even better to find around 2 Mentors.

Concentrate

Stay committed to the field you're learning. Trends will always keep changing, so you can't just chase whatever others say and end up losing your grip like a monkey missing its branch. Work toward the Goal you've set. This is also what I mean when I say you need Passion.

Learn, but Take Breaks

Our brains and minds have a Limit to how much they can take. When you have to come up with a ton of Solutions and the stress keeps piling up, like I've said before, you'll reach a Stage where you feel lost. When that happens, give both your mind and body a rest. Rest fully. Or you can think about how much you'll rest each day and what helps you unwind, and take a little break every day as you go. Remember that nothing is more important than you.

For most of us, there's a best time (or) age for learning. Young people especially have brains that are already open to learning everything at their age. What you learn and which path you take during this time is your own choice. You also need Self Confidence. Only by building the mindset that 'I can do this' will you get through certain things. Once you actually step into the Dev world, you'll each face different problems, and at those times the Self Confidence that says 'I can solve this' is important. But too much Confidence can turn into the stubbornness I mentioned earlier, so be careful with this one.

Also, when you're talking with Seniors and Mentors, or when you have something you want to know or ask, it's important to know how to ask. You might think you're just asking what you want to know, but if the question is out of place, it puts the person answering in a tough spot and can get on their nerves. Some people go out of their way to ask things they could have just found on Google, and that doesn't go well. Even if you're asking because you don't know, it's better to do your own Research first and then ask why this particular point works the way it does. And don't just sit there Coding all the time; learn other things whenever you have time, and keep a note of Tips and Tricks. Make use of your Social Life too, and take your time learning. Learning never really ends, and new technologies keep coming out, so you can't afford to fall behind.

The last thing I want to mention is something that causes trouble again and again: don't do your Coding on a Smartphone. If setting up a Computer isn't easy for you yet, it's fine to start with a Smartphone. But if you want to go Professional, I'd advise working on at least a Laptop if you can. The Experience is very different, and you'll get a lot more done. We're not upset at people for Coding on a Smartphone. What we're upset about is people pointing others down the wrong path by claiming it has all these benefits.

Alright, since you've made it through this long read, I hope you learned something, and I hope some of these points help you on your Beginning Dev Journey. If there's anything you'd like to discuss, I'll be waiting in the Comments.

See you again in the next post.

Have a great day everyone ❤️

Environment

Time Management

Goal

Practice Daily (Passive Learning)

Mentor

Concentrate

Have a great day everyone ❤️
